ST. FRANCIS — Dominican and Catholic
Memorial high schools weren’t the only Catholic
schools in the Milwaukee Archdiocese to earn basketball
championships last weekend. In the championship games
of the Padre Serra Tournament, held at the Cousins Center
March 21, Mary Queen of Martyrs School, Milwaukee, captured
the boys’ title and St. Leonard School, Muskego,
took home the girls’ trophy.
The Catholic school tournament, in its 46th year, pits
32 boys and 32 girls teams in competition for the right
to be called the best Catholic eighth grade team in
the archdiocese. The event is sponsored by the Milwaukee
Serra Club.
Led by the tournament’s most valuable player,
Kumain Mitchell, Mary Queen of Martyrs defeated St.
Gregory the Great of Milwaukee, 41-30. The favorite
going into the tournament, the Panthers from Mary Queen
of Martyrs went undefeated in league play and overpowered
Padre opponents by an average of 21 points per game.
The Trojans of St. Leonard outlasted St. Margaret Mary
School of Milwaukee, 27-20. St. Leonard’s Terri
Wichgers was selected the girls’ tournament MVP.

In the consolation games, the lady Warriors of St. Mary
School in Menomonee Falls won a close match against
St. Sebastian School of Milwaukee, 38-34, and St. Aloysius
School of West Allis upended St. John the Baptist School
of Plymouth, 56-46.
A tournament highlight took place during the presentation
of the girls’ championship plaque. Tournament
directors recently agreed to name the girls’ championship
plaque after longtime Padre Serra volunteer Norm Kelly,
who suffers from terminal cancer. (See Catholic Herald
story, Feb. 26.) Kelly attended the game with his wife
Maryrose and three sons, Danny of Payson, Ariz., Tom
of Madison, and Jeff of Milwaukee, as well as Jeff’s
wife Sue and their four children Amanda, Nick, Jordynn
and Trent.
Seated in a wheelchair and sporting a bright green sweater,
Kelly was introduced to the crowd by Dave Sauceda, tournament
director. With his wife and children at his side, Kelly
handed the plaque to St. Leonard coaches Chris Welsh
and Tom Bichanich.
