Last, rector and pastor at St. John the Evangelist Cathedral, handed the
cathedral's keys to Archbishop Rembert G. Weakland, proved to be thoroughly
Catholic in its ritual.
"The dedication of a church is one of the biggest ceremonies that we have. We
bring everything out of the sacristy. It is very, very Catholic," Weakland said
during his homily.
The Feb. 9 rite of dedication of the downtown cathedral incorporated the
sprinkling of holy water throughout the church, ceremonious lighting of
candles, billowing incense, anointing of the altar and walls with sacred chrism
oil, symphonic and choral music, processions, specially selected Scripture
readings and the liturgy of the Eucharist. More ...
